The magic of seaweed

Did you know that seaweed is considered to be the oldest vegetable on earth...and that is only

the first mind-blowing fact about seaweed that we are going to give you.

For many of us seaweed is something we do not even think twice about when we see it washed up at the beach, some of us are even repulsed by it and won’t swim near it, but you will be astonished by just how magical it is.

On this planet there are over 12,000 different species of seaweed and it is

believed that most of the oxygen we breathe on this planet is produced by seaweed, 70% is believed to come from seaweed whilst only 28% from our rain- forests, making it the lungs of the earth and it should definitely be one of the main elements we try our hardest to preserve.

Seaweed is amazing for skincare and physical regimes but it can also be consumed also for many health benefits.

If you think about it on earth we have such a diversity of different vegetables with all of them containing specific minerals and vitamins. Seaweed is different from this, it is one of the most nutritionally dense foods on this planet, containing most of it in one.

It contains a lot of the macro and micro vitamins as well as vital minerals that we should be intaking on a daily basis to upkeep good health of the body and mind. Some of those being Vitamin K for blood and bone health, Magnesium which is essential for maintaining many vital healthy functions in the body, iodine for a healthy thyroid, iron for everything blood related, it’s main function being to carry oxygen to our cells.

Seaweed is also full of B vitamins which are amongst the most important for our health, Calcium, vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, Zinc, Selenium, Copper and many more.

It is so incredible that by having just half a teaspoon a day of this stuff daily you can get all of these goodies! Nature really is just so wonderful.

It is also an amazing salt replacement, coming from the sea it is naturally salty and it adds that flavour to the dish without dehydrating you and adding more stress to your adrenal glands, keeping stress, high blood pressure and heart diseases at bay.

Certain seaweed is also amazing in higher doses for people with underactive thyroids and can be taken to regulate this due to it’s iodine content. It has also been proven to help people who are facing fertility issues.

For people, even children, who have skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, wounds or burns, you can go and join a local foraging group (to make sure it is the right seaweed for you and that it is not endangered) and collect seaweed from your local beaches to add into your bath, allowing your skin to intake all those vitamins and minerals. This has been proven to be very healing and soothing.

Consuming seaweed also enables amazing brain function, seaweed contains your essential fatty acid, omega 3, allowing us all to refrain from losing our marbles.

Who would have ever known that something that is around us so much could be of such benefit to us?!

Here at Choose Green we are eager to get this knowledge out to the world so we are happy to introduce Certified Organic Seaweed on our salad menu as an extra topping.

Come down and tell us what you think and we bet you will be hooked just like the rest of us.
